Krav1This past Friday evening, we were thrilled to present a seminar about handgun basics to a very attentive group of students at Krav Maga Regina.

As three of our instructors have trained with Expert-Level KM Instructor Richard Kim at his gym in the past for combat training, they were eager to help out – for the night, the students became the teachers!

Peter, Annie and Greg (in front of the class of many of our Krav training buddies) showed students some of the technical specifications of various types of handguns. Many people had never seen real guns before. We went over some common gun myths, and general information with respect to real firearms and the mechanisms by which they can operate. There was a great question-and-answer session, and everybody learned a few tidbits which they took home with them.

At the end of the night, students got the opportunity to handle disabled Restricted-class revolvers and a semi-automatic pistol to get a feel for the steel. Many noted how different a real pistol or revolver feels (even just by the weight) relative to the rubber/plastic trainer guns that are used during Krav street-fight self-defense drills.

We were all surprised to see just how realistic the size of those trainers can be, though – when a trainer-gun was held next to an identical real-but-disabled Beretta 92FS-style pistol, it was clear that the dimensions were exactly to scale!

We had between 30 and 35 people show up, and were thrilled to see so many new and familiar faces in the crowd. Thanks to everyone who attended, and we look forward to returning to KMR for our next session which will focus more on long guns.

We’ll also be back as students of Richard after our current hiatus – Krav is special to us, helping train our minds and bodies to stay sharp over time! Stop by and check them out at – they’re always running introductory sessions. As they say, “Some people come to get fit and they leave safer. Some people come for the self-defense and they leave fit.”
